roses are beautiful in every stage - susie carranza studio

Hello February! Today’s a beautiful rainy day in Southern California, so I can’t take good photos today of the artwork I’ve been working on. Instead I’m sharing photographs of my past few weeks. With everything going on in the world … Continue reading

troubling times...-susie carranza studio

I couldn’t come up with a good title for this post. “troubling times” almost sounds like I’m trivializing the recent events of the world, but I’m at a loss for the right words… Last week, November 8th, was Election Day … Continue reading

revisiting an old painting (or – art therapy)…

I started 2016 with the intention of seeing more of the positive in my life, less of the negative. Being human, I haven’t been perfect at it but I haven’t done too badly! Then about a week ago I got … Continue reading

art journaling…

I’ve drawn, painted, and collaged in notebooks as long as I can remember. Now it’s called art journaling…whatever you call it – I still love it!

Last night I gathered my new not-yet-used Pam Carriker stamps, my beloved PITT artist pens, two of my own handmade stamps, gelli prints, paints, Mod Podge (Hard Coat is THE best!) and got to creating…

art therapy is real…

the term “art therapy” and “art saves” is used quite often, or at least it is in the blogs and Facebook pages I follow. I think after certain words or phrases are used toooo often they lose their original meaning. but I can tell you that there really is such a thing as art therapy – and I don’t need a licensed ” therapist” to experience it!

today my plans suddenly changed, and I found my Sunday being free. I was initially disappointed, upset, and felt very much alone…

so what did I do? I art-ed (is that a word?!) of course!

pulled out the largest canvases I currently own (only 11″ X 14″; they’ll have to do), got my most thrashed paintbrush and got to painting…

…and you know what? it was just what I needed. I can’t control what happens around me, but there’s something about dragging paint around a canvas, ripping up book pages and gluing them down with no plan in mind, spilling drops of paint and creating pools of color – it just feels good.

now if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got some canvases waiting for me…

trying to get back to work…

since lawrence’s dad (my father-in-law) passed away  life seems to have…stalled.  it’s already going to be one month that we lost him (on the 15th) yet it still seems unreal.

so…this week i’m making a conscious effort to do something creative (art therapy?) so i’ve been going through our packed boxes looking for my art supplies.  so far, not bad: found my boxes of acrylic paints and my box of wood pieces, so i can hopefully have new work to share really soon.

yesterday, my creative endeavor was to photograph textures found outside.  i enjoyed it; it was a very warm day, and i’d been sort of hibernating inside lately.  i liked all the textures i found around my parents’ yard (i even included Canela, our dog).

i was hoping this would spark some idea or light a fire in my artistic brain…

…and it did. it gave me the itch to work on some mixed media pieces.  i’ll be starting with the large green heart in the photo below (seems like i painted it eons ago, with watered down lime green acrylic paint).

i have been busy listing sets of cards in my Etsy shop – each set includes 3 greeting cards, blank inside, with images of my original artwork on the cover.  take a look and let me know what you think!  Below is the “Flowers” set; click my shop link below to see the other sets…
